Creating a Professional Looking Floral Centerpiece at Home

One thing I absolutely love and cannot live without is my morning routine.  I wake up, have coffee/breakfast, tidy the house and hit the gym for a long run while watching none other than my fave Good Morning America anchor, Robin Roberts.  While my husband is adamant about tracking the major world issues in the morning on FOX and Bloomberg, I really have no interest in being all serious news all the time.  I need more of a mix when starting my day, which is probably why I love watching shows like Good Morning America where you can get a rundown of the major world events, local weather, sports highlights (at a really high level), health news, recipes and lighter bits of information (ex. Steals and Deals with Tori and even a heads up on holidays like National Selfie Day).

So why am I rambling on about Good Morning America?  Well it just so happens that the show was the inspiration for today's blog post!  We all know that I have a serious flower habit and I find myself swooning over the floral arrangements on Good Morning America pretty much every morning.  Fortunately, it recently occurred to me that I could probably replicate those gorgeous centerpieces myself!  I spent some time studying the flowers in the show's footage and then paid a visit to my local flower supply store.  Lo and behold!  All of the pieces for creating those gorgeous arrangements were pretty easy to track down and fairly inexpensive.  I am sure you are thinking I'm crazy for saying that as you're looking at an arrangement filled with 36 roses.  My secret to affordable roses??  Safeway (my local grocery store)!  Currently they are selling 18 roses for $12.99, so I paid around $26 for the 36 stems, which is a pretty incredible deal.

My attempt at replicating a gorgeous Good Morning America worthy arrangement was a huge success and I am so excited to share this super easy and oh so beautiful DIY with you all today!  See below for all of the details on how I went about creating this floral stunner.

Here's what you will need...

  • 8in x 4in Glass Cylinder Vase
  • Oasis/Floral Foam
  • 1-2 Long and Malleable Jungle Leaves
  • 36 Roses or Similar Flower (ex. Carnations)
  • Sheers (I use clean kitchen scissors)

Instructions

  1. Make sure you have washed and dried your flower vase before starting
  2. Take your jungle leaf and cut it lengthwise along the spine of the leave on both sides to create two leave strips
  3. Line the interior of your vase with each leaf half, making sure to place the freshly cut side down
  4. Place a 6.5-7inch long piece of oasis in the center of the bowl and fill the bowl with tap water, making sure to have the water saturating the entire piece of oasis as it fills the vase to about the halfway mark.
  5. I also like to poke holes in my oasis with a bamboo skewer to ensure that water saturates the oasis all the way to the center and also to reduce the level of resistance when inserting the flower stems.
  6. Remove leaves from roses and cut the stems under standing water and on a diagonal.  I would recommend trimming and arranging each flower one at a time to reduce the freshly cut stem's exposure to air.  **Stems that are overexposed to air will die faster, so going one at a time will help to increase the overall longevity of your blooms.
  7. Start arranging the bottom perimeter first.  These stems can be cut the shortest as they are being placed closest to the water.
  8. Once you have completed arranging a row of flowers along the perimeter, repeat the process for the next level up.  Noting that with each tier, your stems should be cut slightly longer.
  9. When all flowers have been arranged, you can tweak the layers to ensure that they are even and no holes have been missed.
  10. This arrangement is great for a dining table, because the low profile of the arrangement won't obstruct your view of fellow dinner guests.

Creating Floral Centerpieces on a Budget

Budget Friendly Floral Centerpieces | Redefining Domestics.jpg

Last week I co-hosted a surprise bridal shower at work for a colleague/good friend of mine.  We wanted to give her co-workers an opportunity to help her celebrate this wonderful milestone, so my fellow hostesses and I planned an afternoon travel-themed party complete with light refreshments and of course, a game!

When it came to planning this party, we were all about dividing and conquering.  My assignments for the party prep included food, party paper products, planning the game and table centerpieces.  Our office provided a gorgeous tower of Georgetown Cupcakes, so I focused on savory dishes- an ultimate veggie platter and a chips/salsa/guac station (btw- this recipe for guacamole is an absolute must try!  So beyond delish!).

When trying to decide how I to go about creating arrangements for the party tables that were beautiful, unique and budget friendly, I knew that a bit of research would be required.  It was actually while perusing the dining section at my local CB2 store that floral inspiration struck and I had my "Ah ha moment."

CB2's Marta Midnight Blue Double Old Fashioned Glasses were on sale for $1.99 each, which was significantly cheaper than my original plan for vases (i.e. purchasing $8 stock vases from a flower supply store), and the perfect floral vessel solution for my centerpieces.  From there, I knew that my next step would be to visit Trader Joe's for flowers.  I mean the price and quality of flowers sold at Trader Joe's is superb and I have yet to find a comparable alternative.

The arrangements ended up costing about $25 to make (insanely great price if you have ever made arrangements before).  Naturally this latest discovery in the world of budget florals was something that I felt compelled to share with you all on the blog.  So for today's post I am walking through how I went about creating these budget friendly floral beauties.  See below for more details.

What you will need-

  • Scissors or Floral Sheers
  • Rubberbands (preferably green ones)
  • Large kitchen bowl filled with water
  • 3 CB2 Midnight Blue Double Old Fashioned Glasses ($1.99/each)
  • 2 3-Stem Bouquets of White Hydrangeas ($5.99)
  • 1 Bouquet of Mums ($3.99)
  • 1 Bouquet of Wax Flowers or Alstroemerias ($2.99-$3.99)

Instructions

  1. Fill CB2 glasses with water (approximately 3/4 full)
  2. Starting with hydrangeas, cut stems submerged under standing water in kitchen bowl until desired stem length is reached
  3. Place two hydrangeas in each glass
  4. Trim stems and remove leaves from Alstroemeria and divide bouquet evenly amongst the three glasses
  5. Fill in remaining spaces with either mums or wax flowers
  6. Once arranged in the vase, collect the bouquet out of the water and wrap a rubber band around the stems to give them a tighter look.
  7. Trim the ends of the bouquet stems to create an even/flat base and re-submerge bouquet back into water.

Game Day Ideas

February 1, 2016 Callie Cagney
IMG_3899.JPG

Today marks exactly one year since the launch of Redefining Domestics!  This time last year I was celebrating my blog launch, while simultaneously hosting a Superbowl party (whew!).  At the time I was so crazed with getting the final details of the blog and party ready, I wasn't able to share some of my festive game day party ideas with you all.  Today I wanted to take a look back at two great ideas for hosting a Super Bowl party.  These are really simple concepts that you can easily implement and will have you feeling game day ready come Sunday!

Game Day Cupcakes

  1. Prepare Ina Garten's Coconut Cupcake Recipe (or similar) using these football-themed cupcake papers
  2. In a bowl, dump one bag of flaked coconut and mix with 3-4 drops of green food coloring (until you reach desired level of green grass-like look
  3. Apply green colored coconut to the tops of each frosted cupcake
  4. Garnish with a single Game Day Toothpick Flag

Game Day Centerpiece

To create this centerpiece, I centered a vase filled with gorgeous (and very voluminous) hydrangeas towards the back of this round brass tray.  Then I arranged these adorable astroturf yard marker coasters in the center and filled in the side spaces with these party foam footballs.

It's so much fun to have these photos to look back on and honestly I do marvel at all that I have done/accomplished in a year.  It's been a great first year with Redefining Domestics and I am really excited for all that is yet to come with my blog.  Thank you all for your unwavering support of the blog.  You all are my constant inspiration/driving force to keep on posting!
