Create a Beautiful Easter Basket

March 24, 2016 Callie Cagney
Easter Basket 1.jpg

This weekend my husband and I (plus Dolly of course!) are headed up north to spend Easter with his parents.  In preparation for our visit, I mentioned that I will be baking this cake to serve at Easter brunch and I am also planning on bringing a homemade Easter basket as a hostess gift for my mother-in-law.

Yes, I totally went for it and created a very grand basket and hostess gift.  The reason for this elaborate creation is actually two-fold.  First, I hope you all can take some ideas from the many items/goodies you see here when creating your own Easter baskets. Second, right after my husband and I got engaged we went up to my in-laws for Easter and I will never forget the beautiful basket my mother-in-law had put together for us.  It was filled with beautiful candies, gourmet candles and even a toy for Dolly.  It was absolutely beautiful, very thoughtful and something I have always remembered.  So now I am thrilled to have the opportunity to reciprocate this Easter.

Before I could start assembling this Easter basket, I needed to make sure that all of my components were prepped and display worthy.  The chocolates that remained in their original packaging were given fresh coordinating bows.  These gourmet chocolate covered almonds from Whole Foods (pictured above) were transferred to a clear treat bag, tied with a bow and then situated in this beautiful bunny candy dish.

My favorite bit of additional packaging by far, would have to be the green and white Caspari treat box (pictured above).  I had found this box of adorable Easter cookies at Whole Foods, but didn't think that the original packaging would fit the aesthetic of my basket.  When I came across the green and white chevron box I was thrilled!  To keep the cookies looking great, I placed the entire store box inside the decorative box and then lined the edges with tissue paper to keep it from moving during transport.  The cutest part of this box would have to be the removable paper tray included.  It makes for easy removal of the treats from the box without causing damage to the cookies!  So cute and beyond practical.

To create this ultimate Easter basket, I started by lining the base of the basket with Easter basket grass I found at Target.  I then placed the biggest items in the basket first-  the cookie box, Napa Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, Easter bunny candy dish with chocolate jordan almonds.  Placing these items in first helped to balance the basket and begin to set up the parameters.

I absolutely adore Williams-Sonoma's holiday tea towels.  They are always beautifully designed and add a lovely and festive touch to any kitchen, so including this year's Easter themed tea towels was a must!  To display the set of towels- I placed them in front of the cookie box to provide the towels with additional support since they are similar in shape (*Tip- I inserted 2 bamboo skewers between the towels to keep them standing up straight).  Once I had secured the largest items, I began filling in the rest of the basket with most delicious assortment of Lake Champlain Easter Edition Organic Chocolates (again, all found at my local Whole Foods!).  I used the brightly colored chocolate eggs to flank the Napa Cellars wine and secured the Dark Chocolate Bunny to the handle (because it was simply too pretty and delicate to keep in the basket).  The final touches were the Hammond's Chocolate Egg and Hugo & Debra Naturals Egg Shaped Bath Fizz Set.

What makes this basket extra fabulous is the fact that with the exception of the packaging and tea towels, all items came from my local Whole Foods grocery store!  This month has been exceptionally busy with work, so not having to go on some crazy extensive hunt to find beautiful items for my Easter basket was so helpful!  I really hope my mother-in-law enjoys this basket as much as I enjoyed the one she gave me years ago.  For those of you celebrating Easter this weekend, I hope this post has provided you with some ideas for creating a beautiful gift basket for your loved ones.

Happy Easter!

Halloween Treat Bags

Halloween Treat Bag Starter.jpg
Candy Corn 2.jpg

Halloween is right around the corner and while those days of dressing up in costumes are far behind me, I still can't let this holiday go by without indulging in a little Halloween candy!  Looking through stores and Pinterest for inspiration, I came across the most fabulous (and not too juvenile, but still festive) Halloween treat bags, that of course I couldn't resist buying.   Even though my condo building doesn't receive any trick-or-treaters, I still wanted to put together a little something for my friends to enjoy.  This DIY is a easy and delicious way to share in the Halloween spirit with your friends.  Plus, who doesn't love a little candy during this time of year?!?

I am super excited to hand out these gift bags next weekend to my close group of friends.  While I may not be getting dressed up in a costume this year, I can still indulge in a few fun and festive Halloween treats with my friends and of course enjoy seeing Dolly dressed up in her Halloween costume!  Yes I dress her up in a different costume every year, so stay tuned! I will be revealing Dolly's 2015 Halloween Costume on my Instagram page next week!

DIY Packaging for Fall Baked Goods

September 21, 2015 Callie Cagney
Meri Meri Basket Baked Goods .jpg

Fall baking is something I have already started enthusiastically embracing (see this post and my instagram page).  Since apples are just coming into the peak of their season this month I have been focusing on an assortment of apple-based treats.  While my various baked goods have turned out beautifully, my challenge has been the packaging/presentation.  I will spend the time to make a delicious dessert and to have to cover it in either plastic wrap or aluminum foil for transport just seems wrong.  When you go to a lot of trouble to bake a homemade dessert, the last thing you want is to have the treat encased in packaging that isn't reflective of the treat.

Recently while perusing The Paper Source (love this store!), I came across the most adorable Kraft paper berry baskets by Meri Meri.  These baskets were absolutely adorable and immediately became the inspiration for this post. Best part? They are actually part of Meri-Meri's summer collection so I was able to purchase them on sale! (**you can too!--link below)

Happy Fall Baked Treats.jpg

To Make these Goody Baskets:

  • Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Mini Muffins
  • Mini Muffin Baking Pan
  • Meri Meri Berry Baskets
  • Cellophane Wrapping Paper
  • Raffia
  • Gift Tags
  • Gold Pen

To create these festive Fall treat bags, I started by baking up a delicious (and healthy!) batch of fresh Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Mini Muffins. Once the muffins were baked and completely cooled I lined a berry basket with a sheet of the red and white checked parchment paper (sold with the baskets) and carefully filled the basket. (*these baskets can hold more than a dozen mini muffins, so if you want to stretch your batches of mini muffins a little further add tissue paper to the bottom of each basket).

Once the basket was filled with muffins I wrapped them with clear cellophane paper so the contents of the package would still be visible and tied it all together with natural colored raffia ribbon for a rustic Fall touch. The chalkboard gift tags were then personalized with a note written in gold pen, which gave these little treat baskets a final finishing touch.  I love the way they have  turned out and I am thrilled to have a packaging that is both pretty and festive for sharing these delicious fall treats!

End of Summer Pesto

August 31, 2015 Callie Cagney
Basil Pesto Gift.JPG

Since today is the last day of August (the unofficial last day of summer), I wanted to share a great DIY idea for closing out the summer months…make your own pesto!  There are so many individuals who enjoy taking advantage of summer to grow fabulous herb gardens.  Come the end of Summer, many are often left with large hauls of herbs and other produce that need to be used to prevent any waste.  Pesto is a great solution for using up all of your excess summer produce because it's not only easy to make and super delicious, but it also can be made using an array of ingredients (kale, mint, basil, any type of nut, etc..). Making pesto is really all about adhering (roughly not exactly) to the ratio formula and from there, you can go wild with the endless possibilities.  Today I am sharing my take on classic pesto.  This recipe can be used right away, stored in a freezer and even makes for a fabulous gift.

Basil Pesto Ingredients.jpg

Ingredients

  • 2c. Tightly Packed Fresh Basil Leaves (if you run out of basil, spinach leaves are a great substitute)
  • 1/2c. Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 2-4 Cloves Fresh Garlic
  • 1/2c. Olive Oil (+up to 1/4c. more if consistency is too thick)
  • 1/4c. Toasted Pine Nuts
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon Zest (*I prefer to use a meyer lemon, but any lemon is fine)
  • Juice of 1/2 of a Lemon
  • Salt and Pepper to Taste
Ball Mason Jars.JPG
Mini Cuisinart Food Processor.JPG
Chopped Garlic.JPG
Pesto2.JPG
Pesto 3.JPG

Instructions

  1. In a food processor (or blender), add fresh garlic and pulse a few times until minced.
  2. Add Basil leaves and pulse until chopped
  3. Add Olive oil, cheese, pine nuts, lemon zest and juice, pulse until well combined
  4. Add salt and pepper to taste
  5. Divide into three 4oz-mason jars and refrigerate or freeze until ready to serve and/or gift

**If gifting pesto, I recommend adding a cute gift tag and ribbon for a personalized/finished look.

Basil Pesto Gift 3.JPG

While I am still dreaming of the day when I can make pesto grown from basil in my backyard, the bulk basil from the grocery store works just fine.  In addition, it gave me the opportunity to use up a bunch of ingredients I already had in my fridge.  I really couldn't think of a better way to close out the summer season than with such a delicious and very versatile recipe.  And now, on to Fall!

Father's Day Gift Ideas

June 19, 2015 Callie Cagney
137.jpg

Let's face it, buying gifts for guys is not easy.  Whether its my husband, dad or brother, I have always struggled with what to get them.  I don't know the latest and greatest video games and I can't fulfill their dream of owning a Porsche or a fancy watch, so I completely understand why men are often gifted with neck ties and socks.  I am not saying that that's the way to go, but I can understand why people end up resorting to those practical pieces of apparel.

Father's Day is Sunday and this year I felt like I had to come up with something pretty special after I set the bar for myself with my Mother's Day Gift.  I got to work brainstorming and honestly the best advice I can give when trying to think up a gift is to ask yourself "What would (insert name of gift recipient) really enjoy?"  You really do have to take a quiet moment to think about a genuinely fitting gift for the individual.  When thinking of what to get my dad, I realized that I hadn't seen him since February, which was just entirely too long to have been without a visit. So I decided that whatever I was going to give him would be in person and flew down to Florida last night for a surprise visit.

Fathers Day Pic.jpg

My surprise visit has beyond thrilled my dad.  While I wanted to share a bit of what I am doing for Father's Day with you all, I also wanted to provide you with helpful gift ideas in today's post.  Below are a few great ideas to fit a variety of interests and a range of price points.

Vagabond House Steak Knives (Set of 6)

IMG_6476.JPG
IMG_6494.JPG

My husband and I received these rustic Vagabond House steak knives as a gift this past year.  Initially I wasn't sure how much I would use them since they are extremely unique in appearance.  Of course it only took one try with these very sharp steak knives to realize how fabulous they are!  Thanksgiving, winter holidays and even rustic picnicking  have all been great opportunities to use these Vagabond House Steak Knives (*Currently on backorder through Vagabond Houses Official Website, but available here with free shipping!).  In addition to their functionality, I love that the knives are made in the USA and the handles come from naturally shed elk antler.  This is a perfect gift for the dad who loves a good steak and/or appreciates fine cutlery.  *Note- If you plan to give these knives (or any cutlery) as a gift, always make sure to include a penny with the gift.

The Nest Thermostat

NEST Thermostat.jpg

I learned about this product from a friend of mine, who is very environmentally conscious.  After she bought her home, she was left speechless when she received her first utility bill (more than double the cost of  what a normal apartment utility bill should be for the month).  She immediately got to work researching ways to reduce her energy consumption and came across the NEST Thermostat.   This device is replaces your current thermostat and has been engineered to create cost effective energy usage in your home by learning your heating and cooling habits and then adjusting the temperature accordingly.  What makes this gadget even more fabulous is the fact that it hooks into your WiFi and can be operated from your cell phone through the NEST App.  The month after my friend had the NEST installed in her home, she her utility bill reduced by more than half!  My husband and I bought one for our home and we now pay less each month in utilities than we in our old home (and this house is 500 square feet bigger!).  The NEST is a great gift for the dad who loves gadgets and of course, saving money!

Apple TV

Apple TV.JPG

"High Tech" has never really been my thing.  When my husband and I first moved in together he declared that the first order of business was to purge the house of all of my box TV sets for more updated models (my boxed TV sets worked perfectly fine, but in the spirit of "Pick and choose your battles," I let him have this one).  In addition to the television upgrades (ala Costco!- Love that place!), he then started in on upgrading our sound systems and movie watching capabilities.  While there were plenty of technological additions to our house, there was one that really stood out to me as being noticeably fabulous, Apple TV.  Apple TV give you access to Netflix, Hulu, media purchased through the iTunes and much more. You can also sync your Mac Computer or other iOS device to your TV using the Apple Airplay feature.  Installation is super easy and I have found it to be extremely user friendly.  If your dad doesn't have a Mac Computer or other Apple products, Google Chromecast is another option that works similar to Apple TV, but it's PC-friendly.

A Framed Photo

IMG_6572.JPG

This is a low cost idea that is extremely personal and something that my dad absolutely loved when I gifted it to him for Christmas last year.  You can take any photo to your local pharmacy photo center and they can print a larger version for under $5 and then I would suggest looking into one of these pre-matted silver plated picture frames (a personal decor favorite of mine--see this recent post).  Bonus- Frames are currently 30% off at Pottery Barn this weekend in celebration of Father's Day!

Benton's Ham

IMG_6545.JPG
Bentons Ham 2.jpg

This was an idea that came to me after binging on both seasons 1 and 2 of The Mind of a Chef.  The Mind of a Chef is a television series on PBS that profiles various chefs, their cooking, travel, history, humor and science into a beautiful cinematic journey.  One of the episodes featured Benton's Smokey Mountain Country Hams.  Benton's prides itself on tradition, producing slow-cured hams and bacon that have been aged for 9-10months.  Chefs, food critics and culinary professionals laud Benton's Hams as being some of the best in the country.  Since my dad has always been a ham lover, purchasing gourmet hams for all special holidays, I decided to send him a Benton's Ham for Father's day.  He actually had the ham for breakfast this morning and his immediate response after trying it was, "WOW!"  Although this is not a great last minute gift option, since you need to order the ham by mail, it is an extremely high quality product that makes for an excellent gift.

368.jpg

In short, my surprise visit went off without a hitch and my dad was truly touched that I flew down to be with him this Father's Day.  We have lots of activities planned during my stay, but on Sunday I am taking the reigns and plan on serving him a very special Father's Day Breakfast, followed up with  a fun Father's Day Cocktail Party that evening (complete with a Cheesescape of course!).  Even though I am giving him an actual gift (See Benton's Ham Gift Idea), I still wanted to incorporate a personal/homemade touch into my Father's Day plans.  I know I have said this before in previous posts, but I think it is important to reiterate that it really is the thought put into a gift that always seems to go further than the actual gift itself.  Whatever you end up doing to celebrate the father figure in your life this Sunday, just make sure it's full of thoughtfulness and about them.
